THE CONCEPT OF INTERIOR DESIGN IN ANIME
THE CONCEPT OF INTERIOR DESIGN IN ANIME

Modern interior design is the most important element for creating a new world. For this reason, the concept of interior design is a vital issue that we need to think about.

Bringing together and visualizing the elements that define the space is the basic concept of Anime culture as well as architects.

What is Anime?

The word anime was used for the first time in French as 'dessin anime'. In English, it is used as "animation". For the definition of anime, we can say that it is "the animation of drawings of Japanese origin, which have a unique style of Japanese origin". It is perceived as a different dimension throughout the world. Animes are basically formed by the animation of Japanese manga art with the help of animation programs. Mangas are strip cartoons. There are black and white pencil drawings as well as coloured manga types. The doors of the anime world can be opened to different dimensions and can be on topics that appeal to all age groups.

Let's have a look at the types of anime together;

1) SHOUNEN The word means young man. It generally appeals to the +13 age group. It includes the subjects of fighting, war, blood. Most of the popular anime in the world are available in this type. One Piece, Fairy Tail, Bleach, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan and many more.
2) SHOUJO: The word means young girl. It generally appeals to the +13 age group. It includes the subjects of fighting, war, magic, love. They are female animes. Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Ao Haru Ride
3) SEINEN: The word means adult man. It generally appeals to the +17 age group. It can also be called an upper version of Shoujo. Hellsing Ultimate, Elfen Lied, Ghost in the Shell
4) JOSEI: The word means adult lady. It generally appeals to the +17 age group. It includes the subjects of drama, sexuality, romance. Nana, Chihayafuru

When creating a story in anime, two basic questions must be answered.

1- The first one is where and in what kind of place?

2-The second question is when?

The answers to these two questions reveal the space fiction in the anime. That kind of question isn't the concept of space the most fundamental problem of architects? How will users shape this space? What will be the story of the venue setup? etc..

Constitute some of the design parameters in the field of architecture such as modern interior design. In this context, a similar production process emerges in both anime and architecture. In the history of anime, Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most famous filmmakers of the anime world, integrating the perception of space and time with his own style. We can often see Japanese customs and traditions in Miyazaki anime. The Wind Is Rising, My Neighbor Totoro, Flying Away of Spirits.

All the details of in general anime films from the daily life of people to the materials of the place they live in are considered and transferred to the drawings. Thus, strong depictions of places deeply affect the audience and deepen the feeling of events. At the same time, animes allow the viewer to see everything that is impossible for us to experience in the world we live in.

The subject of "Windy Valley", which opens its doors to different dimensions: The world has turned into an uninhabitable settlement after a devastating war called "Seven Days of Fire". Due to a poisonous gas that emerged after the war, all-natural life came to an end, and humankind was also in danger of extinction.

Haven't masks become a normal part of our lives in the covid era?

As a place in the Windy Valley, we see a different world where nature, which has been polluted by human beings and made unlivable, evolves with the instinct of self-preservation.

Another example is the "Walking Castle" anime movie, which tells the story of a young girl trying to destroy the effect of bewitchery made on her. Combining the elements of space with a different language, Miyazaki once again revealed this in the movie Walking Castle. Using space, Miyazaki disconnects us from both the filmic time and the present. It shows us how the events took place in a place with architectural details and makes us live...

There are so many details to be told, to be explained, to be shown….

I finalize my article here with a small definition.

A person watching anime;

-A person who sees himself/herself as an anime hero in his/her dreams because he/she sits at night and watches anime until the morning.

-He/she is a person who constantly brings up anime lines in daily conversations.

-He/she is a person who says "I wish there was an anime version of it" to every object he/she sees.

- A person who wants to go to Tokyo just to buy anime figures. (I haven't been able to go yet, but the websites are not bad.)

As an interior design firm in Istanbul, we always believe that some magic is needed to create catchy spaces. That’s why we always have anime fans in our team :)
